Northern Dog Transfer Network
Every year we save an average of 700 dogs by transporting them out of the communities of the NWT. Some stay here in the Territory but many are flown out to the southern rescue organizations that can foster and adopt them into great homes. This Network of organizations is an incredible chain of caring organizations and individuals with a passion for saving as many dogs as possible. Without these wonderful people many dogs would not be alive today or would be suffering greatly.
Escorting Dogs South
We really depend on people like you to help relocate our wonderful northern specials either to an adopter down South or a trusted Animal Rescue organization.
If you are travelling to a major city in Alberta or B.C like Edmonton, Calgary, Vancouver, Victoria, Kelowna, Nanimo, Comox or Abbotsford you can potentially help a dog get to their new life!
Currently because of the discontinuation of sponsorship we are asking that people interested in helping with transport contact us for instructions on how to help. You would have to call and book a dog on your tickets ( on any airline) but we can reimburse the fee or give a taxable donation receipt. The cost of a dog in luggage is $100. Please email nwtspcayk@gmail.com for details.
NOTE: There is not always room on the plane due to a dog or a rescue not being ready so we may not be able to use your flight. But Thank you for contacting us.

Community Spay and Neuter
The NWT SPCA has a program for community dogs to get fixed. For $250 a family can send in their dog to us and we will get the dog spayed or neutered, and vaccinated if needed. The dog is then sent back to the community. The benefits of this program are tremendous as it helps control the overpopulation of dogs in isolated communities. This program possible because of our partnership with Air Tindi/ First Air and Great Slave Animal Hospital. Please email us at nwtspcayk@gmail.com if you would like to know more about this program. Click for a brochure on the benefits of Spay and Neutering! If the animal has to travel on Air Tindi there is an additional $50 charge. Buffalo Airlines flies a no charge.

Hero Campaign
The HERO Campaign is a way for people to save a dog without the responsibilities that come along with ownership. For $75 (the average cost of a one-way ticket) you can sponsor a dog to fly south to a partner facility, or for $100 you can sponsor a dog to fly to Yellowknife from Inuvik, Cambridge Bay, Rankin Inlet, or any number of the smaller communities in the NWT or Nunavut. This is for dogs who have been impounded for an extended period of time, older dogs, and dogs with behavioral issues that temporarily prevent them from being adopted. It also includes many puppies for whom the winter and harsh climate of the North would be a death sentence.
If you are interested in saving a dog and becoming a HERO, please email us! Click here to see some of the dogs that have been sent down south from NWT and Nunavut since 2010.

Therapy Dog Program
The Therapy Dog Program is run by St. John Ambulance in Yellowknife. Any dog of sound temperament can become a Therapy Dog, regardless of size or breed, once they pass the St. John Therapy Dog test. All volunteers must be able to make the commitment of time to visit on a regular basis. They must also be willing to participate in a screening process, which includes a criminal record check.
Evaluation sessions are held to test dogs on obedience and temperament. Testing consists of a heeling pattern to show control when walking, a sit and down stay, noise distraction, greeting a friendly stranger, reaction to other dogs, interaction with wheelchairs, accepting a treat from a stranger, a patient draped in a robe and a crowd petting the dog. Once the dog and handler have passed the test they're ready to visit their designated facility under supervised visits.
Therapy Dogs offer unconditional love and friendship to the sick, lonely and helpless. Dogs are non-judgmental. They are undeterred by human frailties and accept human illness, handicap or disfigurement, confusion or tears. They calm the distressed, distract the pain-ridden, and comfort the despondent. They, in return, are often accepted when humans are rejected. If you are interested in the program and would like more info, contact Trevor or Christine
at St John Ambulance, 873-5658 or info.yellowknife@nt.sja.ca
