Executive Director

NWT SPCA is the largest SPCA in the NWT located in Yellowknife, the Territory’s capital. We are a volunteer-based organization striving to protect and enhance the quality of life for all domestic animals in the Northwest Territories. Focusing on the health and wellbeing of the Territories domestic pets, the NWT SPCA runs lifesaving Community Spay/Neuter and Animal Wellness Clinics for companion animals. Education initiatives and pet food drives, adoptions and dog transfer, and animal health clinics are just a few programs we offer.  We are here to help all 33 communities in the NWT and western Nunavut. These programs are improving the welfare of our Northern pets and the communities they live in.

The NWT SPCA is seeking an Executive Director to oversee the organization’s operations and management. It is a new position that will be vital to facilitate the growth and restructuring of the organization.

General Description

The Executive Director is expected to play a leadership role in the organization and oversee operations of the NWT SPCA. They will work closely with the Board of Directors to carry out Board mandate as it relates to administration, fundraising initiatives, regular public communications, and shelter policy implementation while upholding the strategic plan. The Executive Director will oversee shelter operations and will be responsible for ensuring mentorship of all staff and volunteers and will report to the Board of Directors.

Primary Duties

  • Communicate effectively and efficiently with Board of Directors regarding shelter operations and other relevant matters
  • Manage and make decisions that lead to the success of day-to-day operations at the NWT SPCA shelter, working with current team.

This includes but may not be limited to:

  • Health and welfare of shelter animals
  • Supervision, management and support of current staff
  • Recruitment, hiring and releasing of employees
  • Management of current membership and potential volunteers
  • Oversee upkeep and maintenance of shelter
  • Oversee animal intakes and departures
  • Be involved with grant applications and proposals
  • Implement and/or ensure the maintenance of appropriate workflows, processes, information systems and administrative systems for document management
  • Act as or designate an appropriate media contact for social media and regular public communications
  • Maintain a working relationship with local veterinarians and the EHO, and consult with them on relevant animal matters
  • Ensure the visitor experience is a positive one at shelter

  • Superior communication skills
  • Experience in a senior leadership role
  • Experience in business planning
  • Experience in recruiting and management of a volunteer network
  • Experience in public and media relations
  • Demonstrated success in fundraising, and obtaining donations and/or grants
  • Demonstrated passion for animal well-being and care of domestic animals

Desired qualifications, skills and experience

  • Experience reporting to and working with a Board of Directors
  • Experience in Financial Management
  • Post-secondary education in a related field (business administration, animal sciences, etc.)
  • Experience and/or training in dispute resolution
