BEcome a flight buddy
There is no better feeling than knowing that you took part in helping a dog get to their new life!
You can support the NWT SPCA by registering your upcoming flights. We send hundreds of puppies and dogs to their furever homes with adoptors, fosters and to other shelters through the flight companion program, where travellers register upcoming travel plans that match the needs of animals in our care.

How to register upcoming travel plans?
Provide your travel plans, and we will reach out to you if we have a buddy who matches.

Be sure to click on subscribe to sign up for notifications on travel needs where we cannot find a flight buddy. We will send out the information via email when we need to arrange unexpected travel emergency flights.

What to Expect?
If there is a dog needing to fly to your destination, and the animal rescue or adopter can take them at that time, we will ask you to book the pet on your ticket.
How to book the Dog on a Flight?
Due to the Privacy Act, we cannot call to book your pet on your flight. We kindly ask you to call reservations to do book the pet on your flight. You would ask the airline representative, if you can book a dog on your ticket. They ask for your booking code and will see if there is room on the flight.
If there is room on the flight, they will want the following information:
-
crate dimensions
-
weight
-
breed
-
age & name of the pet

We will give you all of that important information before you call.

Two ways to Travel
Pet In-Cabin Reservation
Small dogs or puppies can travel in the cabin with you. This is the best option for littles! The carrier is soft and fits under the seat in front of you. Be prepared for layovers as the little ones accompany their companion from take-off to final destination.

Pet as Checked Baggage
Unfortunately, not all the dogs can fly in the cabin with you. The larger ones must fly in a specific section of the plane. It is a safe and secure area with climate control. Generally, any flight with a layover that exceeds two hours is not an option for any pet checked-in.
If the dog gets booked, you will be sent a new itinerary with the dog added.

Some airlines require payment at time of booking. Others pay at check-in. We will reimburse or give a tax receipt.

Meet at the Airport
Approximately 90 minutes before your departure, an NWT SPCA representative will meet you at the airport with your flight buddy. It is important to arrive on time, as the airline may refuse the pet if you are late.
Check-In
You will check in at the airline counter, where they will tag the pet carrier.
We will be there to help!
Pet In-Cabin go with you on the plane, and with checked-in pets, the dog and crate are taken to the oversized baggage area before boarding. You can go through the regular security process. Once on the plane, an airline representative will give you a tag indicating the dog is on board.

If you do not get this tag, please ask them before you take off.
